Object identification

Museum curators are happy to try to identify objects brought in to the Museum. We may be able to provide an instant identification but in most cases this may take some time, and we may ask for the objects to be left at the Museum. In this case we provide the owner with a receipt.

If the Museum is unable to provide an identification, we will suggest another institution or person who may be able to help.

Bolton Museum cannot provide valuations for any items bought in by the public.

Archaeological finds

A more specialist identification can be provided by the Greater Manchester Finds Liaison Officer, Frances McIntosh.

Frances works for the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS), a voluntary recording scheme with a publicly-accessible database.

She is keen to see any finds and will record all British archaeological artefacts (dating before 1700).

Frances visits Bolton Museum on the 3rd Thursday of every month.

The PAS service operates in addition to the Museum’s object identification system.
