Aquatic conservation
The aquarium is licensed as a zoo and one of its responsibilities is conservation.
A number of the displays contain species that are under threat, including some that are actually now thought to be extinct in the wild!
Stocking zoos locally and internationally
Some of the fish bred at Bolton have been given to other zoos and public aquaria in this country and abroad, helping to provide healthy, disease-free stock for display and new breeding programmes.
This also lessens the pressure on wild stocks.
