General Register Office Index
This was formerly known as the ‘St Catherine’s House Index’ from its previous location in London. It is an index to all births, marriages and deaths registered with the civil authorities in England and Wales from 1st July 1837. Our copies at Bolton are on microfiche. Births, marriages and deaths are indexed separately; the indexes are quarterly within each year and are arranged in strict alphabetical order by surname.
This index provides the name of the Registration District. A list of the current addresses of Registrars is available in the Searchroom. Please ask a member of staff.
