Detail of "Nearing Camp" by Thomas Moran

Highlights include a significant collection of works by Bolton-born artist Thomas Moran and his wife Mary Nimmo Moran. There are also works by Rowlandson, Blake and Turner as well as a small selection of old master paintings by Giordano, Colonia and Dughet.

Oil Paintings

thumbnail image "Nearing Camp, Evening on the Colorado River" by Thomas MoranThe majority of the 300 oil paintings in the collection are British and date from the 19th and 20th centuries. These include works by Linnell, Millais, Knight, Moran and Penrose to name a few. A small but significant group date from the 17th century, with good examples by Italian, French and Dutch artists.

Watercolours & Drawings

thumbnail image "Perspective view of Fonthill Abbey" by Joseph Mallord William Turner There are over 800 watercolours and drawings in the collection, and all but 15 of these are by British artists and date from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The drawings by foreign artists are mainly Italian, French and Dutch and date from the 16th-19th centuries.

Prints

Almost all are by 20th century British artists, and in this period the collection encompasses a wide range of media from etchings, mezzotints and lithographs to screenprinting and photolithographic techniques.
