A small but significant group date from the 17th century, with good examples by Italian, French and Dutch artists.

Works by artists in the 20th century are strongly represented, especially from the period of the 1920s-1950s, including Augustus John, Roger Fry, Dame Laura Knight, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell, William Roberts, Edward Wadsworth, Charles Ginner, Walter Sickert, Ivon Hitchens, Terry Frost, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and John Bratby.

The collection also contains portraits of local personalities, particularly of the 19th century and local landscapes.
