Latin name: Lasius niger

Brown Garden Ant alongside a centimetre scaleAlthough we have all seen this ant, and many people have problems with it in the house, it is not actually harmful.

A major attraction for this species is sugar and other bits of food left in kitchens.

We may not think a few crumbs or grains of sugar are enticing and may not even notice them, but to brown ants they are a magnet.

Brown Garden ants gather around some spilt sugarBrown garden ants will only keep on coming back into a house if it is worth their while.

So, if you make sure that any spills of sugar etc are cleaned up, and they don’t find anything to eat – no more ants!
