Activities Details

  • Our interactive workshops last approximately 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Each workshop is available for a maximum of 35 children.
  • A free lunch room is available when you book an interactive workshop.

We offer interactive workshops at three fantastic venues:

  • Bolton Museum, Art Gallery & Aquarium
  • Hall i’th’ Wood Museum
  • Smithills Hall

All three venues have an exciting range of museum souvenirs and replica artefacts to buy at pocket money prices.

Free Face to Face workshops

The following two activities tie in with the current exhibition that runs until Saturday 6th September 2008

Sculptural faces (Key Stage 1 & Key Stage 2)

  • Shows that portraits can be found on a wide range of objects as well as paintings, sculptures and photographs
  • Shows that portraits are made for many different reasons
  • Shows how portraits can communicate different meanings through pose, expression & clothing
  • Develop observation and drawing skills for KS1 & KS2 pupils
  • Encourage pupils’ imaginations and creativity through their creation of paper sculptural faces

Face to Face (Key Stage 3)

  • To develop visual vocabulary, listening and speaking skills using appropriate art vocabulary
  • To develop printmaking techniques using positive and negative images
  • To use paintings, photographs and prints to show how the artist and sitter can communicate messages
  • To develop observation and creative drawing skills
  • To think about and discuss popular culture
  • To develop skills in colour mixing

Portraits (Key Stage 1 & Key Stage 2)

  • Discover how portraits can communicate different meanings through pose, expression and clothing.
  • Dress up in costume, pose and make a preparatory sketch, developing observation and drawing skills.
  • Use photography and paintings to show how portraits can convey ideas about relationships between people.
  • Develop pupils’ visual vocabulary and their listening and speaking skills.

(Teachers are encouraged to bring cameras to document this session for follow up at school)

Exhibition X Factor (Key Stage 2)

  • Take part in a range of fun educational activities to examine paintings and decorative arts from different cultures and periods.
  • Be an art detective and ‘interrogate a picture’.
  • Participate in “Exhibition X Factor” and be a judge to choose the winners!
  • Develop speaking and listening skills, using appropriate art vocabulary.

Journeys (Key Stage 2)

  • Be a global traveller and discover natural and manmade objects from around the world on an exciting journey through the museum.
  • Explore how signs and symbols communicate ideas and meanings.
  • Design symbols representing objects to create a graphic record of your journey.
  • Observe and draw patterns found on artefacts from a range of world cultures
