The History of Spinning at Hall i’ th’ Wood. Your pupils will be able to participate in fun, educational activities, which will enable them to discover the important local history of one of Bolton’s most famous characters - Samuel Crompton.

Aim:

  • To provide pupils with a greater understanding of Samuel Crompton’s life through a range of enjoyable, exciting and inspirational activities, including the opportunity to dress up in costume and become a traditional spinner.

Objectives:

  • See where Samuel Crompton invented his famous Spinning Mule.
  • Watch a talented spinner use a spinning wheel to transform wool into thread.
  • Become children from the past with traditional costumes and have a go at carding and spinning some yarn from a sheep’s fleece.
  • Participate in an exciting tour of the Crompton rooms within Hall it’h Wood.
  • Discover how the Spinning Mule revolutionised the cotton industry and speeded up the industrial revolution.
