Activities Details

  • Our interactive workshops last approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • Each workshop is available for a maximum of 35 children.
  • A free lunch room is available when you book an interactive workshop.

We offer interactive workshops at three fantastic venues:

  • Bolton Museum, Art Gallery & Aquarium
  • Hall i’th’ Wood Museum
  • Smithills Hall

All three venues have an exciting range of museum souvenirs and replica artefacts to buy at pocket money prices.


Aquarium feeds

Bolton Museum has a fascinating Aquarium with freshwater fish from around the world.

By prior arrangement, it may be possible for your class to watch the fish being fed.

Animal Adaptations (Key Stage 2)

  • Become natural history detectives and record observations through annotated
  • sketches.
  • Sort and classify a range of animals into groups.
  • Discover how animals have adapted to different environments.
  • Investigate why some animals have adapted their bodies to protect them and help them to survive.

Any Old Bones (Key Stage 2)

  • Become a natural history explorer and record observations through annotated sketches.
  • Discover which groups of animals do not have an internal skeleton.
  • Compare and study skeletons from different animals focusing on their structures and movement.
  • Investigate the lifestyles of the animals to discover how the skeletons have changed and adapted.

Prehistoric (Key Stage 2)

  • Journey through time to discover fascinating facts about the prehistoric world.
  • Handle ancient fossils and life size casts of huge dinosaur bones.
  • Become a crime scene detective and discover which ancient suspect gnawed on a prehistoric bone.
  • Investigate fossils to discover how prehistoric creatures have adapted their bodies to different environments.

Rock around the Clock (Key Stage 2)

  • Investigate rocks and minerals as a junior geologist.
  • Participate in exciting experiments to demonstrate the weathering process.
  • Handle volcanic material and ancient fossils.
  • Compare and classify a range of rocks and minerals.
