Bolton's first museum, the Chadwick, was opened in 1884. Initially it was expected that William Midgley would only have to work with a limited selection from the existing library collections, but the bequest that enabled the council to build the Chadwick Museum in Bolton Park (later renamed Queens Park) prompted a deluge of donations.
From these beginnings Bolton's museum service has grown from strength to strength and has developed collections that have gained a world wide reputation and are a real asset to the people of Bolton.
Free lunchtime talks
To celebrate the anniversary there will be a series of free talks given by Bolton Museum staff throughout the year. The talks will be from 1.00 to 1.30pm and tea and coffee will be provided.
