All change at Bolton Museum for local history gallery

The current local history gallery (including the permanent Humphrey Spender Worktown gallery) at Bolton Museum, Aquarium and Archive will close from January 4 2010. A new gallery will open in November 2010.

Artists impression of new galleryThe Art Gallery, Egyptology Gallery, History Centre and Aquarium will remain open throughout the work.


The new displays will tell the story of Bolton. The new gallery will be split into three areas. The first section tells the story of Samuel Crompton who invented the Spinning Mule.

It will show the effect the mule had on textile production in Bolton and beyond. The second section will show how the physical landscapeof Bolton has changed over the last few hundred years. The final section will tell stories about the people of Bolton.

Artists impression of new galleryAs well as improvements to the gallery, we will also be improving access.

A lift will be built between the museum gallery and the balcony.

This project has been possible with funding from the North West Development Agency and Bolton Council.

Artists impression of new galleryBolton Museum will be working with the Harris Museum in Preston and other museums in the North West.

The aim is to promote these museums to local people and visitors to the area.
