Crowds flock to the museum for Egyptomania week

Our themed week for February half term – ‘Egyptomania’, a special week of free events, quizzes and activities all about the ancient Egyptians, attracted 13,923 visitors to the museum.

Visitors enjoying a craft activity during half term weekThis means that the museum averaged around 2,000 visitors per day. These figures were over 5000 more than what we had for ‘Dinosaur Week’ during the October half term of 2008.

Demand was so popular that museum staff had to place a booking system for all the afternoon workshops. Those of you who were lucky enough to take part in these workshops enjoyed activities such as pyramid building, pectoral collar making, mask making and Egyptian drawing.

Other activities available throughout the week such as object handling, quizzes for different age groups, and storytelling went down a treat with children and adults alike.

Our Easter activities are expected to be just as popular.
