A rare opportunity to handle the remains of animals that lived in Britain before the last ice age 10,000 years ago, including reindeer, mammoths, rhinos, hippos, wolves, bears, lions and hyenas. Families can also explore the evidence for humans in Britain hundreds of thousands of years ago. Staff will be ready to answer all your questions about human evolution, so come and find out where we really came from.

‘The Dark Night’ - free bat hunt activity at Smithills Hall
Join Don Stenhouse, Curator of Natural Sciences for Bolton Museums and Archive Service, as we turn bat detective to seek out and learn more about our mysterious nocturnal friends. Suitable outdoor footwear is advisable. The event is free and light refreshments can be purchased. Smithills Hall Museum will be closed to the public during this event.

A fascinating exhibition exploring the history of mosques in Bolton. The exhibition will feature a brief history of the first mosques in Bolton, and objects from the current 20 Mosques in Bolton; brought to life with stories from elders in the community.

New date 'An Introduction to Human Evolution' free talk at Bolton Museum
Please be aware that this talk has been rescheduled from Thursday 25 July. As part of Bolton's Darwin200 celebrations and Bolton Museum's major summer exhibition 'Simple Beginnings: The Story of Evolution', Dr Una Strand Viddarsdottir presents a summary of findings in human evolution, reviewing what we know and the latest discoveries.

As part of Bolton's Darwin 200 celebrations, Professor Steve Jones of University College London discusses human evolution in this fascinating talk. Looking at human lifestyle, he asks whether there is any chance of future human evolution.
